 Sample Prayers

Prayers may be injected into a ceremony at any time, however, it is most common to use an invocation prayer to open the ceremony, usually right after the bride is walked down the aisle and just before her hand is presented in marriage, and a closing prayer to ask for the blessing of the marriage. The closing prayer is usually placed just after the exchange of rings and just prior to the pronouncement. It is also common to pray for the blessing of the rings.

Invocation Prayers - These are just a few examples of invocation prayers to be used in any Christian service. There are many others to choose from, or you may even wish to write your own special invocation prayer. Some of these examples are written by Pastor Monty, others are from various sources.

A.      O Gracious and Everlasting God, you have created us male and female in your image; look with favor upon this man and this woman who come to you seeking your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep the vows and promises which they make, through Jesus Christ our Savior.

B.          Father, ________ and ________ are now about to vow their undying loyalty to each other. Especially do we pray your divine blessing on these two who come here in this high moment of their lives. Be hear to them as they take their promises to each other, that they shall pledge their vows with deepest sincerity knowing full well the meaning of the words they say. And do grant to us all, we pray, a heightened sense of the joy of life because we share this moment with them. In your loving spirit. Amen.

Closing Prayers/ Benediction  - These are just a few examples of closing prayers to be used in any Christian service. There are many others to choose from, or you may even wish to write your own special closing prayer. Some of these examples are written by Pastor Monty, others are from various sources.

A.           Blessed are you, God, Creator of the Universe. Grant the love which unites __________ and __________ may grow in abiding happiness. May there be peace in their home, quietness and confidence in their hearts. May they be sustained in their love by finding a place in their hearts for all people in this world.

B.      This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. If any person is in Christ, that person is a new creation; the old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and whoever loves is born of God and knows God. Whom, therefore, God has joined together, let no one put asunder.
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace, both now and forever. Amen.

C.           Heavenly Father, you have blessed the covenant of Christian marriage as it represents the covenant between Christ and His Church.

Send therefore, Your blessing upon Groom and Bride, that they may surely keep their marriage covenant and grow in love and grace together, that their home may be a haven for blessing and peace; through our Lord Christ, in whose name we pray, Amen.

D.      St. Francis Prayer

God, make ____________ and ____________ a channel of your peace:

That where there is hatred they may bring love;
Where there is hurt they may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
Where there is doubt they may bring faith;
Where there is despair they may bring hope;
Where there is darkness they may bring light;
Where there is sadness they may bring joy.

For it is by giving that they shall receive, by losing that they shall find, by forgiving that they shall be forgiven.

God grant that they seek rather to comfort than to be comforted,
To understand than to be understood,
To love than to be loved.

E.      We invoke thy gentlest blessings, O God, on all true lovers. We thank you for the revealing power of love, which divines in the one beloved the mystic beauty, and glory of humanity. We thank you for the transfiguring power of love, which ripens and ennobles our nature, calling forth the hidden stores of tenderness and strength and, overcomes selfishness by the passion of self-surrender.

May the love of ____________ and ____________ be strong, that no misunderstanding loosen the bond and no passing of the years have the power to dim the light that now glows in them. May they early gain wisdom to discern the true values of life, and may no circumstances take from them the wholesome peace and inward satisfaction which only love can give.

Grant them vision to look beyond this moment to the generations yet to come, and to know that the home they create will be part of the sacred body of humanity in which you dwell, that they may have reverence for others and for themselves, and drink the cup of joy with awe.

F.           Eternal Father, redeemer, we now turn to you, and as the first act of this couple in their newly formed union, we ask you to protect their home. May they always turn to you for guidance, for strength, for provision and direction. May they glorify you in the choices they make, in the ministries they involve themselves in, and in all that they do. Use them to draw others to yourself, and let them stand as a testimony to the world of your faithfulness. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.

G.      May Almighty God bless you by the Word of his mouth, and unite your hearts in the enduring bond of pure love. May you be blessed in your children, and may the love that you lavish on them be returned a hundredfold. May the peace of Christ dwell always in your hearts and in your home: may you have true friends to stand by you, both in joy and in sorrow. May you be ready with help and consolation for all those who come to you in need; and may the blessings promised to the compassionate descend in abundance on your house. May you be blessed in your work and enjoy its fruits. May cares never cause you distress, nor the desire for earthly possessions lead you astray; but may your heart's concern be always for the treasures laid up for you in the life of heaven. May the Lord grant you fullness of years, so that you may reap the harvest of a good life, and, after you have served him with loyalty in his kingdom on earth may he take you up into his eternal dominions in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, his Son, who lives and reigns with him in the unity of the Holy spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen

H.      May Almighty God, who at the beginning did create our first parents, Adam and Eve, and did sanctify and join them together in marriage, pour upon you the riches of his grace, sanctify and bless you, that you may please him both in body and soul: and live together in holy love unto your lives' end. Amen

I.       Most gracious God, we give you thanks for your tender love in sending Jesus Christ to come among us, to be born of a human mother, and to make the way of the cross to be the way of life. We thank you, also, for consecrating the union of man and woman in his Name. By the power of your Holy Spirit, pour out the abundance of your blessing upon this man and woman. Defend them from every enemy. Lead them into all peace. Let their love for each other be a seal upon their hearts, a mantle about their shoulders, and a crown upon their foreheads. Bless them in their work and in their companionship; in their sleeping and in their waking; in their joys and in their sorrows; in their life and in their death. Finally, in your mercy, bring them to that table where your saints feast forever in your heavenly home; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

J.       O God, you have so consecrated the covenant of marriage that in it is represented the spiritual unity between Christ and his Church: Send therefore your blessing upon these your servants, that they may so love, honor, and cherish each other in faithfulness and patience, in wisdom and true godliness, that their home may be a haven of blessing and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

K.          Adaptation of the Apache Wedding Prayer

Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter to the other.  Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other.  Now you will feel no loneliness, for each of you will be a companion to the other.  Now you are two bodies, but there is only one life before you.  Go now to your dwelling place, to enter the days of your life together.  And may your days be good, and long upon the earth.

L.      May these two find happiness in their union. May they live faithfully together, performing the vow and covenant they have made between them; and may they ever remain in sympathy and understanding: that their years may be rich in the joys of life, and their days good, and long upon the earth.

M.     May this moment gleam eternally in your lives. May it add glory to every achievement and cast a blessed light over any ill fortune that may appear. May you give vitality to each other in all undertakings. May you care for each other in all sadness. May you give cheer to each other as you each care for the sacred passion of love. May all that is virtuous, beautiful and trustworthy, remain with you always. Amen.

N.          Eternal God, without your grace no promise is sure. Strengthen this loving couple with the gift of the Holy Spirit, so they may fulfill the vows they have taken. Keep them faithful to each other, and fill them with love and joy that they may build a home where no one is a stranger. Guide them by your light to serve you all the days of their lives; through Christ Jesus our Lord, Amen.
